Esthar was really quite something. Every time Selphie visited the mystical city that had been hidden for the last seventeen years or so, she walked away with a sense of wonder. It was so different from the rest of the world in terms of technology that it was almost frightening. Before, she hadn’t had the time to truly admire the place, what with Rinoa being comatose, Edea searching for a way to rid herself of her sorceress powers and Lunatic Pandora taking place. But now that everything had calmed down a little, the tiny brunette was finally able to walk around the city and really see for herself what it had to offer, and imagine how some of the places she’d visited would look like with the same level of tech that this place had. That was probably the direction the rest of the world would move in, so it was best to get familiar with these things as soon as possible to prepare for the inevitable change. As much as Selphie liked tinkering and messing around with machines and computers and such though, there was something she valued over all those things, and it was the one thing she was missing in that marvelous city; actual human interaction. Sure, people talked to each other on the streets, but shops had already replaced people with machines. In a way, she found it fascinating, but she also couldn’t help but miss talking to the shopkeepers while she was in the store. That’s just the way things go though, she supposed, but that didn’t mean she had to like it. Hopefully the rest of the world wasn’t in a rush to catch up with Esthar, because it would seriously be weird if, come tomorrow, shopkeepers around the world would be replaced with machines.
Stepping off the platform that had transported her around the city, Selphie couldn’t help but miss cab drivers as well. They could be incredibly rude, but she found it fun to talk to people, even if they weren’t always pleasant company. And it made her feel accomplished when she could get a sourpuss to smile at one of her jokes or comments. As she walked to the city’s exit, the brunette couldn’t help but feel a little lonely due to a lack of interaction throughout the day. She’d spoken to the contact for her mission, but it had been very brief. And after that, she’d spent most of the day by herself in her room, writing up a mission report. With a heavy sigh she trudged out of the gates and headed back in the direction of where she’d been told to pick up her plane to take her back home. Judging from the info she’d been given, it was a small thing, barely big enough for two people. It was certainly smaller than the Ragnarok, which disappointed her dearly. The Ragnarok had been a joy to fly around with. The noise of the engines, the odd falling sensation she felt whenever she descended too quickly, it had all been marvelous. But beggar’s couldn’t be choosers, and Selphie was already thankful that they’d agreed to let her use one of their planes to fly back to Balamb. They’d been reserved about just giving their technology away, but ultimately she’d been able to convince them with the promise that she’d return soon. She probably would too. The trade negotiations were on the table now, and after both parties had agreed to the terms, Selphie would probably end up flying back to seal the deal. Hopefully. She just hoped she was trusted with that sort of thing, and that they didn’t see her as a simple errand running kid who could only ever deliver stuff and then parrot other people’s words. In the end she could understand if they did see her as such though, despite all her experience dealing with Ultimecia, she really hadn’t been on any solo missions before. It was understandable if they doubted her judgment, but she’d show them she could be reliable! It was all going to work out fine in the end!
Now where did they say the plane would be waiting for her? To the… west… right? She simply shrugged her shoulders and started walking to the west. Even if it wasn’t there, she’d find it eventually. It was still early anyway, and she wasn’t expected anywhere else until at least a week from now, so she had plenty of time to wander around. Her sense of direction was pretty decent though, she’d probably find what she was looking for before the end of the day.

So this was it. He had to admit that it was sort of anti-climatic. He always imagined that he would be kicked off the presidency after a hail of gunfire and blaze. Something full of glory and awesomeness. Yet he was simply asked to step down for the good of the country and he simply did so. Tooootally not what he had envisioned what being kicked out of the office would be like. Still, despite the sense of melancholy over the whole thing, Laguna couldn’t help but feel relieved. Like a sudden weight lifted from his shoulders. He no longer had to be careful of what he said, what he did, or how he appeared to others. He was horrible at it anyways and since Kiros and Ward weren’t around to keep him in check, it was even worse.
He got his machinegun, the only trust tool that he’s ever had, his duffel bag full of equipment and supplies (likely not anything he required but stuff he haphazardly tossed in) and dug out his old traveling clothes. Hell, he even fit in them to boot! It was a lucky day for him and despite their poor condition, he still put them on. It was invigorating the way they made his outlook change on life the moment he slipped them on. The bitter grim feeling of failure turned to a bright opportunity. He was his own man again. The vagabond that he should always have been and he was finally free to move about and go home.
Esthar wasn’t home; despite the number of years he’s been there, it had never been home to him. He was a jester playing king with others doing the work for him so the joke never came to light. It finally did and with his duffle bag on his shoulder, and his machinegun strapped over the other shoulder, he was finally free.
At least, that was the idea but despite having lived in Esthar for years on end, Laguna still didn’t know what was what or how to leave the city for that matter. His sense of direction was absolutely horrible. He had wandered around two hours and had even asked directions from the people (which they were confused as to why the ex-president didn’t know his way around) and even after getting directions he seemed to always get turned around in the wrong direction one way or the other.
He pressed the palm of his hand against his forehead and sighed in frustration. Where was Kiros with his uncanny sense of direction? Where was Ward with his big fists to knock him upside the head for getting loss once again? ”Leave it to me to get lost in my own city.” He said out loud, although he supposed it wasn’t his city anymore.
It was time to ask for directions once more. He tapped his chin in thought as he glanced from citizen to citizen before spotting his victim. He ran toward them, ”Hey you there, young lady! Can you tell me how to get out of this city? Embarassingly enough, I seem to be lost.”

Hmm, okay so… it was to the left, right? After wandering around for a while longer, Selphie came to the conclusion that she’d taken a wrong turn somewhere, and she was well on her way to becoming hopelessly lost. She’d been so sure about this road leading to the city’s exit… but somehow it had lead her straight back into the city’s core. “Um…” there were hardly any people around this part of town, so finding someone to ask for directions proved to be a bigger challenge than she’d thought. After looking around for a few minutes though, the brunette simply shrugged and started to walk in the direction that felt right to her. It was still early, and she wasn’t expected to return home for another week so she could afford to be lost for now. Eventually she’d find what she was looking for, either because her incredible sense of direction lead her there, or because sheer dumb luck was on her side. Either way was fine with her.
As she walked, she couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed with this visit. She’d spoken to all the right people, and by all means, she’d completed her mission with relative ease but… she’d kind of hoped she would catch another glance of Esthar’s president, the magnificent Sir Laguna. She’d seen him in person before, but at that time there was so much going on with Rinoa and Edea and even the world itself that even a fangirl like her hadn’t felt inclined to go dance around him taking pictures for her blog or whatever. And he’d been on the Ragnarok with her before, but she’d been too busy piloting to be able to go and see him… plus there was still quite a bit of crap flying around all of them at the time, so yah. But things had calmed down now, and so Selphie had really hoped she’d get the chance to see him this time so she could tell him how awesome he was and how she was his biggest fan and maybe even get him to leave her a message on her site. Even if he just said hi and nothing else, it would still be a message she’d cherish forever. Plus she’d have bragging rights within the fan group for having gotten their hero to take some time out of his busy schedule to greet her. But alas, she’d been told the president had left the city. They hadn’t been willing to comment further on the issue, so Selphie could only assume he had picked up his banner of heroics once again and was travelling around with Ward and Kiros, like in the old days.
Selphie nearly had a heart attack when she spotted a man running up to her, calling out to her in need of assistance. He seemed… awfully familiar. Her mouth dropped open ever so slightly as her mind tried to process what was happening, because surely something so amazing couldn’t happen to a mere mortal like herself. Oh gods… OH GODS IT WAS SIR LAGUNA, WASN’T IT?! Of course it was, if anyone could identify this man among a thousand other similar looking men, it was Selphie. She’d studied many of his pictures, and his features were etched forever into her brain. She’d recognize him anywhere. “H-Hi…” she replied in an uncharacteristically soft tone of voice, her mouth closed and then warped into a tiny smile. As tiny as it might be though, it carried pure happiness on it all the same. “I’m actually a little lost as well…” she giggled, lightly tugging on her collar. Was it hot in here or what? “And looking to get out of here as well so… maybe we can search for a way out… together?” If he agreed, she was going to faint for sure. In fact, she felt kind of wobbly already so she could see herself fainting all dramatically no matter what his answer was going to be.
